Canadian-funded IMPACT Justice Project to host Media Law Workshop
Media personnel from across the region are attending a Media Law Workshop being hosted by the Canadian Government-funded project Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice). IMPACT Justice, which is a regional justice sector reform project, is being implemented from within the Caribbean Law Institute Centre, UWI, Cave Hill Campus.{{more}}
The workshop, which takes place from today February 23 to February 24 at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, Barbados, falls under the projectâs Public Legal Education Component. The topics to be presented are aimed at addressing the rights of the media; the role of the media in educating the public about their rights and the mediaâs duty to act responsibly.
The workshop will commence with an Opening Ceremony, at which Dr Margaret Gail Miller, senior director to the Caribbean Regional Programme and director for Canada to the Caribbean Development Bank, will deliver remarks on behalf of the Government of Canada. Professor Velma Newton, regional project director of IMPACT Justice, will provide an introduction to the project.
Commenting on the goals of the workshop, Professor Newton stated, âIt is expected that the delivery of this programme will result in increased knowledge of the rights of journalists and the legal parameters within which they are expected to operate; increased knowledge of the rights of the public in relation to the media and an overall awareness of the principles of responsible journalism.â
