St Hillaire, a known pool shark, shot his way to the top of group, which saw 36 men competing for EC$500 and a chance to be in the finals on March 12, where they can win EC$5,000.
Beating Cosmos Hackshaw 2-0 in the last game of the night at the Police Canteen in Kingstown, St Hillaire sent a message to last yearâs overall winner Alson Barker.
âI only gave Barker last year for he to enjoy he self. I run things; nobody else run things; Iâm the boss,â quipped St Hillaire in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
St Hillaire walked away with the Police Canteen Trophy, EC$500 and a place in the national finals. He was congratulated by Police Commissioner Michael Charles.
Tournament supervisor Cleve âSkipâ McKenzie said that Fridayâs turnout was a good one and he is expecting even better participation at the other venues.
âI think it was a good turnout for the first night and what I am seeing also is that about 60 per cent of the persons that came out are new faces, younger guys. We had to also turn away some persons who came after the 8 p.m. registration time, so I am telling persons to remember the cut-off time for registration is 8 p.m. and the starting time is 6 p.m.,â stressed McKenzie.
He added that the younger players in some instances did well, beating some of the veterans.
The second leg of the competition, which uses the best of three elimination process moves to Nani Bellingy in Pembroke this Friday, January 22.
The other legs will take place at the Tunnel View Bar in Byera on Saturday, January 30; Over the River Bar in Sandy Bay on Friday, February 5; Big City Life Bar in Richland Park on Friday, February 12; Bequia on Saturday, February 20; Azard St Hill in Troumaca on Saturday, February 27 and Tree House Bar in Arnos Vale on Saturday, March 5, with the grand finale on Saturday, March 12 at a venue to be decided on.
