ULP has done more for South Windward in 14 years than NDP – Stevenson

The Unity Labour Party (ULP) has done more for South Windward in their 14 years in office than the New Democratic Party did during their 17 years in government.

This claim was made by parliamentary representative for South Windward Frederick Augustus Stevenson, as he addressed a meeting of the ULP at Biabou recently.{{more}} He told the audience that as a young boy, he witnessed the failed attempt of the New Democratic Party (NDP) to start a housing programme at Diamond Estate.

“…in their 17 years in office …they half completed three [houses] down at Diamond; they didn’t have any door or window and you know what used to occupy them, the cows on the Diamond Estate,” Stevenson declared during the October 25 meeting.

He then told the packed audience that the ULP, in their 14 years in office, have created a housing revolution like no other in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Look at what we have done over in Diamond. We have built a housing project for many persons that is there for all to see and that is not the only housing project, but throughout the length and breadth of St Vincent and the Grenadines…,” Stevenson stated.

The South Windward representative then said the NDP had offered lands to residents of Adelphi for EC$3.50 per square foot, but only one person in the area paid for the land.

“Only one single individual at Adelphi paid for the land… we did the work and we offered over 35 persons a reduced cost for the lands because we re-surveyed some and we give them those lands at $0.50 per square foot.”

He highlighted the aim of this government to help persons who occupy State lands to own these lands, so they can be used to help further themselves and their children’s.

“That is what Labour love is all about, ensuring that you own your own home and own your own lands.”

Stevenson, who is the Minister of Social Development and National Mobilization, also stated that part of the ULP’s plan is to allow universal access to education for all. He said his constituency of the South Windward was the first to construct a kindergarten area at a primary school. He also indicated that soon another on will be constructed in Biabou at a cost of EC$300,000.

The member of parliament, who is seeking his second term as the respresentative of the area, also outlined some of the major accomplishments of the Government in his constituency.

“We have the best tourism recreational facility at Rawacou; we have constructed on the top of Akers Hill to supply pipe borne water to the entire Calder community, a 20,000 gallon water tank there… now every single hour of the day, pipe borne water is there for the people of Colonarie.”

He also mentioned the construction of a 1,900-foot road at ‘Top Hill’ village, which he said is the “best piece of Basic Need Trust Fund (BNTF) concrete road in the entire Caribbean.”

Stevenson also reassured the persons in the audience that his work in South Windward was not done and encouraged them to vote for the ULP at the next election to see the his work continued.

“This is a government that cares, this is a government that loves the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines and I want to say to you when you go to the polls when the next elections are called, you have to vote with your conscience for the party of love and that party is the Unity Labour Party.”

The meeting also heard addresses from Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Senator Camillo Gonsalves, Minister of Agriculture Saboto Caesar, ULP candidate for Marriaqua St Clair ‘Jimmy’ Prince and former representative for the area Sir Vincent Beache.
