Nutrition outreach programme targets youths for healthy lifestyles

The Nutrition Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, in collaboration with the Adult and Continuing Education Unit in the Ministry of Education, is co-ordinating a nutrition outreach programme for youth in the Dauphine/Gomea area.{{more}}

The programme commenced on Wednesday, October 8 and will continue every Monday and Wednesday until the end of November 2014.

The programme is designed to provide youth in the Dauphine/Gomea area with knowledge and skills that will equip them with the information which they need to make informed nutrition decisions and live healthier lives.

The objectives of the programe are: To educate participants about the nutritional needs for young adults required for maintaining healthy lifestyles; To increase participants’ awareness of obesity as a non-communicable disease and its risk factors, including weight management; To provide skills in food portioning, nutrition label reading, food safety and meal planning and preparation.

Resource persons will be drawn from the staff of the Nutrition Unit in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, as well as staff of the Adult and Continuing Education Unit in the Ministry of Education.

The programme is being coordinated by Wendy Williams, Community Nutrition officer in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment. It will culminate with a graduation ceremony and food display.
