NDP opens office in South Leeward

Member of parliament for South Leeward Nigel ‘Nature’ Stephenson has described his new constituency office, which was opened last Saturday, as a house for all.{{more}}

Flanked by past and present members of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) at the opening ceremony, Stephenson stated that the time has come for the people of South Leeward and the nation as a whole to stand up and “take back the nation from the hands of an incompetent Government”.

As he addressed the gathering on Saturday evening, he said there were persons who had nothing to eat, while Unity Labour Party (ULP) cabinet members, present and past, are “living lavish lifestyles”, a release from the NDP said.

Stephenson said the NDP is all for investments, but the workers at Buccament Bay Resort must be paid and not blamed. He also stated that it would be interesting to know which individual in the ULP got $100,000 as a Christmas gift from the Resort and a house constructed for them, the release said.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace once again called on the Government to review the policy concerning retirement benefits in connection to the National Insurance Services (NIS). He was at the time referring to a constituent, who, at the age of 60, was told there would be no regular pension for her, since she had not met the requirements, even though she had worked for close to 15 years.

Eustace also spoke about the plight of farmers and stated that the NDP will soon reveal in detail to the public what the party intends to do with regard to the agricultural sector.

Other speakers on the night included Senator Dr Linton Lewis, Daniel Cummings, MP for West Kingstown, Major St Claire Leacock, MP for Central Kingstown, and former MP and representative for South Leeward Jeremiah Scott.
