Customers of Café Soleil were able to sample Japanese cuisine last weekend, prepared by Japanese volunteer Kei Kusaka.{{more}}

Kusaka, who works as a Fishing Marketing Research Officer in the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries, prepared grilled rolled tuna, tuna salad and sushi rolls, all of which were on display at the café.

Kusaka also worked along with the kitchen staff of the restaurant, which included interns from the Technical Division of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, to create the dishes.

General Manager of the Café Jhanice Nelson told SEARCHLIGHT that the food tasting was done to educate Vincentians about different cultures and foods.

Nelson explained that Kusaka, a regular customer at the café, approached her about placing a flyer at the café about the Japan Day celebrations. She then came up with the idea to have Kusaka prepare Japanese dishes, so that the public could sample them.

“Not a lot of people in St Vincent are aware that you can eat raw fish, so I thought it would be a good way to start introducing different cultures and foods from around the world,” Nelson said.

She added that the café will hopefully be featuring different foods from various parts of the world on a monthly basis.

Kusaka also interacted with customers of the café, explaining how the dishes were made.(OS)
