Scores of persons, along with members and friends of the Society, gathered outside the Peace Memorial Hall last Friday, following which they marched through the streets of Kingstown to the music of the Police Force band before converging at the Victoria Park for a brief ceremony.
Before the Society officially becomes 25 years old in June, representative of the NSPD Esroy Bute said the Society has planned many activities leading up to the big date.
The celebrations are being held under the theme: âNSPD, vibrant and alive at 25â.
Bute indicated that plans are already in place to host radio and television programs, along with workshops.
He said the Society will be conducting their annual school awareness program, educating students on persons living with disabilities.
Among other activities outlined, Bute said the march was also geared towards raising funds for the Melanie McKenzie Educational Scholarship. He explained that the fund had been set up in memory of the late of Melanie McKenzie, a past president of the NSPD.
Delivering a brief address, Minister of Culture Frederick Stephenson pledged his personal support and that of the government to the NSPD.
The minister also offered congratulatory remarks to the NSPD for the work they have been doing over the years.
Other brief addresses were delivered by President of the NSPD Patricia Cumberbatch and Assistant Superintendent of Police Jonathan Nicholls.
The celebrations will come to a close with a banquet in June.(KW)
