Agricultural Labs to be handed over by ROC to Government

The ceremony of Handing Over and Official Opening of the Agricultural Cooperation Projects between the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be held at Orange Hill Farm on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 10:00am.{{more}}

During the ceremony, the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory and the Agro-Processing Laboratory, two joint projects successfully managed by the Taiwan Technical Mission since established respectively in 1999 and 2005, will be handed over to officials of the SVG Ministry of Agriculture.

Rohan Mc Donald, an agricultural officer who holds a Master’s degree in Tropical Agriculture, awarded by Taiwan National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, is to take charge of the Plant Tissue Culture Project, while Wendy Michael, another agricultural officer and food scientist, who graduated from Taiwan National Chung-Hsin University, will be responsible for the Agro-Processing Project.

The Embassy of Taiwan emphasizes that the handing over of established and well managed projects is to mark a milestone in the cooperation between two countries, and is fully in line with the country’s main theme of international cooperation to pursue the progressive partnership for sustainable development. Since 2010, the Government of Taiwan has identified and prioritized Sustainable Marketing System Projects on its agenda for agricultural cooperation with SVG. On the handing-over of the said projects, the Produce Packaging Station, a facility of EC$300,000 invested by Taiwan, is to be opened simultaneously. With the Station, the local farmers can have their produce collected, graded, packed, cold stored and better marketed. By doing so, it will also benefit farmers, with the added value of the produce.

In addition, the Government of Taiwan has decided to inject another EC$300,000 to a Greenhouse Cluster Program and set up 20 greenhouses by the end of 2011. This greenhouse cluster will help ensure the stable supply of quality produce for local markets and function as a training center to equip the local farmers with advanced agricultural technique.

For marking the centennial of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with SVG, the Embassy of Taiwan has initiated a series of special events. The handing over and official opening of the agricultural cooperation projects between two countries surely will highlight the celebration of this special occasion.The ceremony of Handing Over and Official Opening of the Agricultural Cooperation Projects between the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be held at Orange Hill Farm on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 10:00am.
