Some persons in the crowd told SEARCHLIGHT they had been evacuated from the four-storey building as a result of a fire. Others appeared not to know why they were on the outside, and said a fire drill may have been in session.

When contacted yesterday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Godfrey Pompey denied that there had been fire in the building.

He disclosed that the fuse of a fluorescent bulb in one of the offices had blown.

This problem, he said, caused smoke to engulf the room.

As a result, the staff of the various offices were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Pompey further stated that the Fire Department was called in, as well as VINLEC, to conduct an analysis of the situation.

Pompey noted that the problem was identified and the situation rectified. (HN)
