Adonal Foyle donates shoes to Tomas victims

Adonal Foyle’s Kerosene Lamp Foundation (KLF) has donated over 300 pairs of shoes to victims of Hurricane Tomas living on the Windward side of St. Vincent.{{more}}

On Saturday, November 13, Adonal Foyle’s All-Star Student-Athletes and their mentors loaded up a truck of donated CrocsTM and carried them to the communities of Fancy, Owia, Sandy Bay, Tourama and Chester.

“I was greatly troubled to hear about the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Tomas on the lives of my fellow countrymen, and so glad that I could rally my All-Star Student-Athletes to assist in some small way,” said Adonal Foyle. “I feel that it is very important to develop a strong sense of civic duty in the younger generations as we must all help our fellow citizens. In addition to daily reading assignments, spending two to three hours a week doing community service projects is a requirement for being one of my All-Star Student-Athletes.”

This was the first time Foyle’s All-Star Student-Athletes had participated in such a large community service project, and they found the experience extremely rewarding. The project is part of a larger mentorship program in which the All-Stars initially spent two weeks in Orlando, Florida, under the direct supervision of Adonal Foyle and, upon their return to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, were charged with the mission to improve themselves academically and athletically, while becoming better citizens under the guidance of mentors. The All-Stars hail from Bequia, Calliaqua, Canouan, Keartons (Barrouallie), Mayreau, and Union Island, and have been paired with upstanding citizens within their local community as mentors.

“The sun was hot, and the work was not easy, but our All-Stars did an outstanding job greeting the community members and treating them with respect as they went and distributed the shoes,” said KLF’s Executive Director, Shiyana Valentine. She went on to say: “We were just happy that we could play a small part in brightening the day of those who had gone through the trauma of the hurricane. According to Mayreau All-Star Nemiah Alexander: “The people were excited to receive the shoes and I liked to see them happy with what we were giving them.”

Important local partners include Samuel Browne, Tiziana Browne, Sabrina Mitchell, the Headteachers and key teachers at the Fancy Government School, the Owia Primary School, the Tourama/Overland Primary School, and the Sandy Bay Government School, Ben’s Car Rental, Latoya Creese, George Stephens, Mr. Stapleton, and the entire staff at the Owia Salt Pond Park. KLF is extremely proud of their All-Star Student-Athletes: Consolo Adams, Nemiah Alexander, Leandru Edwards, Jemmile France, Zanif Sandy, and Azizah Stowe; and mentors Roseman Adams and Owen Isaacs.
