McIntosh called to Bar

Lauren McIntosh has vowed to change the negative impressions or misconceived notions about the legal profession which have been formed over the years. The young lawyer made this statement at the High Court in Kingstown during her admission to the Bar of the Organization of East Caribbean States on Monday, October 25, 2010.{{more}}

McIntosh is the daughter of Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sir Frederick Ballantyne and the late Marcia McIntosh-Regisford.

McIntosh’s list of qualifications includes a Bachelor’s degree in International Economics and Finance from the Ryerson University in Canada, and a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) with Upper Second honours from the UWI Cave Hill Campus. McIntosh also graduated from the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, and was placed on the Principal’s Honour Roll, having obtained eight grade A’s in 11 subjects.

Justice Frederick Bruce-Lyle, addressing McIntosh, stated that it was the first time that he has seen such an excellent pass since he has been presiding over admissions to the bar.

Bruce Lyle advised McIntosh to not be arrogant, or to favour money in the practice of the profession, but to approach it with humility and integrity. He further urged her to share her knowledge with fellow lawyers and friends.

He also expressed his pride in seeing McIntosh called to the bar, having been a close friend of her mother.

“It is indeed a proud moment for me, as it is for you and your family,” Bruce Lyle said.

Making remarks on McIntosh’s behalf, Parnell Campbell QC described McIntosh as a ‘shining jewel’ who will bring “pride to us in St. Vincent.”

McIntosh was also described as an honest, humble and noble individual and a perfectionist.

McIntosh, in her response, thanked her family who stood beside her during her studies and provided their support. She also extended gratitude to her colleagues and friends who witnessed her admission. The motion for her admission was made by Chief Magistrate Sonya Young and seconded by lawyer Stanley John. McIntosh further stated that she intends to treat and represent her clients well.

McIntosh began her practice in the profession at the Chancery Chambers in Barbados on September 1, 2010 and will continue at that Chambers. She was admitted to the Barbados bar on October 22. (OS)
