Fred Providence dies at 67

A funeral service will be held for retired public servant Fred Providence this afternoon.{{more}}

Providence, 67, died on Friday, September 24, at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Providence, a resident of Queen’s Drive, was an outstanding public servant, rising to the post of Director of Audit, from which he retired, after 37 years of service, on February 15, 1998.

Providence joined the public service in 1961, and moved through the ranks, serving as Accountant General from January 1, 1978 until December 17, 1979, when he was seconded to the National Provident Fund office as Director. He remained there until January 29, 1981. The next day, on January 30, 1981, he was appointed Director of Audit.

This afternoon’s funeral service will be held at the Kingstown Methodist Church, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 2, Providence’s interment will take place in his home village Troumaca, after a brief burial service at the Troumaca Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m.

Providence is survived by six daughters, 12 grandchildren, several siblings, nieces and nephews.
