Close to 25 security officers for the community managed sites attended a two-day workshop organized by the education department of the Ministry of Tourism on Monday and Tuesday this week, at the National Insurance Services training room in Kingstown.

The seminar was conducted by retired senior police officers Cecil Gordon and Cyril Doyle, with more than fifty years experience between them.

While there, the security guards were given lectures on topics which would be beneficial to them while on duty at the sites.

These included qualities of a good security guard, dealing with the public, use of force, customer relations, handling emergencies, protective and physical security and safety in the workplace among other topics.

Education Officer in the Ministry of Tourism Marina Lampkin said that the training of the officers was just as important to the sustainability of the sites as its customer service and maintenance.

She said that the safety and security of visitors to the facilities as well as the collection of fees for the use of amenities at the sites all ensure that the venues function at a high standard.

This week’s workshop is to be followed by other seminars in communication and conflict resolution in the near future.
