Anglican School says Hats off to Reading

The students of the Kingstown Anglican School gained an A plus for their 2010 edition of the Hats Off to Reading project.{{more}}

Giving them high marks was the school’s Literacy Coordinator Jacqueline London, following last Friday’s end of the one-week reading and spelling development program.

London indicated that in the three years that the school has been having the program, this may have been the best year to date.

She said that the students showed greater enthusiasm as they participated in the spelling bee, reading, public speaking and quiz competitions that were organized and held during the week.

Apart from the competitions, the students accompanied by teachers, visited a number of pre-schools around Kingstown, as well as the Thompson Home where they read to students and the elderly residents of the Home.

They were also visited at school, by members of the public who read to them, shared jokes and stories.

The highlight of the program was Friday’s march through Kingstown accompanied by the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force Band, with students and teachers decked out in their custom-made hats and chanting ‘Hats Off to Reading’ as they made their way to The St. George’s Cathedral for a rally.

London admitted that although this year’s event was a success, there remains some work to be done.

She indicated that some changes will be made to next year’s program which will make it even better than the just concluded outing.
