Expect bigger, better things from Fryktion 2010

When SEARCHLIGHT interviewed Ramon “Fryktion” McDowall at the start of Vincy Mas 2009, he predicted great things. He was not far off.{{more}}

The much sought after Brooklyn based Vincentian music producer laid down some of the hottest tracks for this year’s Carnival, including Road March song, “Mad House” by Shertz “Problem Child” James and third place winner, “Yuh woman butting me,” sung by the super producer himself.

In a follow-up exclusive interview with McDowall earlier this week, the producer said he was lost for words when he heard that two of his tracks placed first and third in the Road March competition. “I was totally speechless when I heard that two of my productions had made in the top spots this year,” he noted.

Saying that he never envisioned “Yuh woman butting me” to do as well as it did, he admitted that he knew “Mad House” would take the Road March title. McDowall said he was surprised at how quickly “Yuh woman butting me” cemented itself throughout the carnival as being a bona fide hit.

Adding to his list of accomplishments, McDowall has also produced music for James “Jamesy P” Morgan “Ants in yo suga pants”, Kellon “Top Notch Swif” Belgrave’s “Nobody can talk to me” and Shertz “Problem Child” James’ “Rude and Freaky”, just to name a few.

Describing his music as fine wine, McDowall said his work is only getting better with time. “I know I had to step up my game from last year and the year before and bring my A game to the table this time around,” the young maestro added. It is not the first time, however, that his name has come in for mention. In 2007, McDowall produced Problem Child’s “Party Animal”, which took the Road March title.

His biggest regret, however, was not being in St Vincent for this year’s festivities. “I would always follow the carnival activities on the Internet and I just kept kicking myself when I was hearing all the fun that people were having back home,” he chuckled.

Describing Problem Child as his favourite artiste to work with this season, he said no other greater feeling came than when he got the opportunity to work with his mentor, Alston “Becket” Cyrus on the “Yuh Woman Butting me” remix. “This was one of the highpoints of my life and getting to work with him was a great honour,” McDowall noted.

Seemingly still full of energy, McDowall says he is ready for Vincy Mas 2010 and indicated that his workload will begin to intensify around September. He lauded artistes such as two-time Soca Monarch “Skinny Fabulous”, “Problem Child” and popular Hot 97 disc jockey Scratch Master for pushing Vincentian soca to the world. “I think right now we are ranked at the top in soca music with the quality that has been coming out in previous years,” he said.
