The competition required entrants to submit essays of 300 words or less, describing why their mothers (or mother figures) are so amazing. With some 130 entries, Head of Sales and Marketing at St. Vincent Broadcasting Corporation Candice Sealy related that many of them were “very heartwarming, and some even brought a tear to the eyes of the judges.”

First prize was awarded to 18-year-old Falon Preddie, who wrote about her mother Jackline Greaves-Preddie. Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT, Falon recounted the numerous times that her mother would go without so that she and her brother could eat. It was clear that she has great admiration for her mother’s strength, determination and faith in God. “When I grow up I want to be just like her!” she gushed.

Jackline Greaves-Preddie was somewhat overwhelmed at having such a loving daughter, and was thrilled that she had won. Greaves-Preddie admitted that she had not known that her daughter had entered the competition until after she had submitted her entry. “It’s amazing how kids take note of the things we do.”

A divorced, single mother, Greaves-Preddie acknowledged that raising two children on her own had been no bed of roses, but through the grace of God she is making it. “Being a mother is a tough job. You have to dress like a lady, act like a man and work like a dog!”

As first prize winners, Falon and her mother received an all-inclusive weekend getaway for two at the Fair View Guest House, an Oyster blender from Courts, a gift basket from Kismet and a celebration pack courtesy Oasis Spa and Wellness Centre – which includes a manicure, pedicure, facial and massage.

Second prize went to Charmaine Cozier and her mother Delores Cozier, and third prize was awarded to Zuleika Lewis, who chose to write about her older sister Margaret Lewis-John, who took the responsibility of raising her when their mother died.

The runners up received certificates for facials at Oasis Spa and Wellness Centre and $100 gift vouchers from Coreas Hazells Inc.
