Fancy women receive award for creativity

The women of the Fancy Community Help Group (FCHG) were on Wednesday morning presented with a certificate of award and a medal of honour for their creativity in the development of their community. They received the award from the Geneva-based Women’s World Summit Foundation for the community banking system they have set up to benefit the women of the Fancy community.{{more}}

At a ceremony at the University of the West Indies Open Campus, Head of the Women and Development Unit (WAND) Dr.Judith Soares made the presentation to Wendy Michael, Juney Baptiste, and Magdalene King, president, treasurer and secretary, respectively, of the Fancy Community Help Group. This award was to have been presented on October 15, International Day of the Rural Women, but because of transportation difficulties they were unable to come to Kingstown to accept it.

Soares, in presenting the certificate, congratulated the women of the FCHG and pledged WAND’s continued support of their community development project which benefited the women of Fancy. Host of the event was Dr. Adrian Fraser, Head, UWI Open Campus. Present at the ceremony were Cecelia Batson-Rollock (WAND) and Michael Thomas, Research Officer- Office of the Principal, UWI Open Campus and members of staff of the UWI Open Campus, SVG.

The Women and Development Unit of the University of the West Indies has been supporting projects in Fancy since 1997.
