The rally, which saw outstanding performances from a number of school musical bands, also included the presentation of awards to 18 students for outstanding academic performances in the 2008 A’level and CAPE Exams.

Deputy Chief Education Officer Luis de Shong, who gave remarks on behalf of the Minister of Education, said that the introduction of music bands has formed part of the extra-curricular programme in secondary schools since the academic year 2005/2006. He said the programme seeks to address the emotional and physical needs of students by “providing services to assist them to develop their full potential.” de Shong pointed out that it is heartening to see the high level of enthusiasm among the band members. On behalf of the Ministry, he pledged “to be resolute in our efforts to provide access and quality Education to all persons in this nation.” de Shong also congratulated the awardees for their outstanding academic performances.

Minister of Culture and Chairperson of the National Independence Committee René Baptiste said: “…we must remember that there is a lot for us to be thankful for in St Vincent and the Grenadines.” Baptiste pointed out that over the past 29 years, “…we have achieved many milestones in Education, Sports, Literature and Music, and should celebrate them.” Baptiste urged the students to “continue to strive for excellence, because when you strive for excellence, you raise the flag of SVG even higher.”

The rally also included an Exhibition of projects that are being undertaken in secondary schools. Remarks were also given by Caricom Youth Ambassador Renando Henderson and Commonwealth Youth Caucus Representative Nazim Gittens. Junior Soca Monarch Hans John gave a performance to close the curtains on the rally. (VM)
