5 secondary schools qualify for Finals of National Quiz

Five secondary schools have qualified for the Finals of the National Quiz of the inaugural Students of Heroes Gallery.{{more}}

The schools are: The Barrouallie Secondary School, the Bequia Community High School, the Mountain View Academy, the St Clair Dacon Secondary School and the St Vincent Grammar School.

The Finals will take place today, Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Peace Memorial Hall, from 1:00 p.m.

The winning school will represent St Vincent and the Grenadines at the Semi Finals of the regional Competition scheduled to be held in Dominica on October 21, 2008. The Finals will take place in Barbados on November 6th.

The finalists were selected from last week’s preliminaries in which fifteen of this country’s secondary schools participated.

The purpose of this project is to increase awareness of the region among the students of the Caribbean, build scholastic abilities in the participating students, and promote solid principles of integrity in future leaders.

The two main components of the project, which is being held under the theme: Caribbean Development Through Visionary, Decisive Leadership, are a quiz and a creative expressions aspect.

The participating countries are St Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia, Grenada, St Kitts Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, the British and U.S Virgin Islands, Montserrat, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the prizes to be won are electronic equipment, scholarships (including a university scholarship), book grants, savings accounts, a multimedia projector for the winning school and Prime Minister Trophies.

So far, sponsorship of this project has come from the St Vincent Electricity Services Ltd, Digicel, Grenadines Airways, St Vincent Cooperative Bank, Western Union, the Knowledge Institute, and the Ministry of Culture. A number of individuals and churches have also supported this venture.
