Biennial Parrot Census 2008 begins

The first leg of the Biennial Parrot Census 2008 commenced on Tuesday, March 4, in the Colonarie area.{{more}}

The Forestry Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is conducting the census throughout five sectors in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to determine the population of the endemic parrot species of the National Bird of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Amazona Guildingi, to determine the distribution of the population and the habitat condition.

The census will also be carried out in Richmond, Cumberland, Vermont, and the Jennings Valley.

To date, 720 Birds are estimated to be in the wild, and every two years, the Forestry Department carries out a survey to determine whether the population is stable.
