Will Kingstown Medical College close?

The official word is that the Kingstown Medical College will close on December 15, but will it? And if it does, would the void be filled? Perhaps!{{more}}

Even as workers at the medical school reportedly began receiving their severance packages, at a press conference earlier this week, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves again stated that discussions are continuing with officials from the school for a four-year programme to be based here.

If this materializes, the dark cloud that hangs over the heads of the stakeholders concerned, like the landlords, could be removed.

The Prime Minister said that he met with a negotiator from the school in late September in New York, and more talks are scheduled.

However, on the day of the press conference, Tuesday, October 9, Dr Gonsalves met with officials from another medical school, who are also interested in bringing a school to these shores.

He lamented on the St George’s University situation, stating “if we remain perpetually as a sidekick of the Grenada school, will we go beyond 400 (students)?”

He mentioned other medical schools that are based in other islands, where the student bodies are in the thousands, suggesting that the St George’s University’s desire for exclusivity on the island is unpractical, considering the small student body that the school brings here.(KJ)
