Youlou art auctioned at cocktail reception
Two pieces of art which were made by students during the Youlou Arts summer workshop, were auctioned at a cocktail reception held at the Grenadine House on Friday, August 3.
The two buyers of the works of art, who wished to remain anonymous, said that they would donate one of the creations to the Childrenâs Ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital while the other would go to the St Benedictâs Nursery.{{more}}
The pieces were made during the month long summer programme where over 120 children, ages 5-12 years from the Kingstown, Georgetown and Barrouallie areas were taught to appreciate art.
Founder of Youlou Arts, Camille Saunders Musser said this yearâs programme was based around the theme âCreatures and the Deep Blue Seaâ. The youngstersâ art pieces were based on the theme.
Saunders said each year, the programme, which has been going strong for seven years, has a different theme, but she was particularly impressed with the creativity of the students this year, who were under the guidance of art teacher Shevorne Neckles.
Saunders said that Neckles, whose parents are from Grenada, was born in the US and is a celebrated artist who has opened the eyes of the participants to the art world. She also pointed out that not only did the students receive training, but teachers were also involved in the workshop so that they could pass on their knowledge to students to help them deepen their appreciation and understanding of art.
A slide show of the work done over the month was also presented at the cocktail, which was held to close the programme. (SG)
