The St. Vincent Union of Teachers Co-operative Credit Union (SVUTCCU) is once again playing a vital role in educational development.

On Tuesday, August 7th, the credit union hosted a ceremony at the Methodist Church Hall to recognise members’ children who were successful in this year’s common entrance examinations.{{more}}

A total of thirty students were honoured, including the two scholarship awardees, Keslia James of Union Island and former Kingstown Preparatory School student, Rishi Ramsamooj.

Speaking with Searchlight, the two awardees shared their dreams of a bright future. Keslia, who will attend the Girls’ High School, hopes to become a Bank Manager while Rishi Ramsamooj, who will be attending the St. Vincent Grammar School, wishes to become a pilot engineer or an aeronautical engineer.

Both students received scholarships valued at $650 per year for their five-year secondary school career, while book vouchers of $100 each were presented to the remaining students.

Speaking at the ceremony, Byron Wilson, who spoke on behalf of the credit union’s General Manager, congratulated outstanding students stating “You all are winners.” He also urged students to continue to work hard so in five years time they will be eligible to apply for scholarships to attend the SVG Community College and later, to further their studies at University.

Wilson also requested that students make good use of their bursaries and become assets to the community as well as examples to their peers.

He also appealed to parents to continue to support their children just as they did during preparation for their Common Entrance Examinations, as this support is critical throughout their school years and beyond.

Wilson also emphasized the credit union’s commitment to education and the development of their Human Resources. He boasted that the credit union had granted fifty-four scholarships successfully over fifty years, and was currently providing scholarships to outstanding performers at both the Common Entrance and O’Level Examinations.

The Credit Union, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year is planning to review the scholarship programme, so that the number of scholarships given and the value of each scholarships will increase.
