Bethel students ready for the world of work
It was a career day indeed for the fifth form students of the Bethel High School as they showed up at school all elegantly dressed and looking as if they were ready to take on the world of work.
The students entered the school gate with broad smiles across their faces and a bit of nervousness in anticipation of what was to come.{{more}}
Just before their interviews, the students gathered together for a short session with their Principal and Representatives of various business places who were on hand to conduct the interviews with the students.
This is the fourth year that the school is hosting the programme, which aims at preparing the students for the world of work by teaching and giving them the first hand experience of how to conduct themselves during an interview.
During an interview, Coordinator and Head of the English Department at the School, Roderick Jones told SEARCHLIGHT that this was the second phase of the programme since the students were taught how to present themselves during job interviews and were given guidance on how to prepare job applications.
âWe at the School are trying to ensure that the students get a holistic education and try to prepare them in all possible ways, including preparing them for the world of work,â Jones highlighted.
This according to him, is one of the biggest activities in the school and since the launching of the programme over the four-year period it has grown significantly.
The programme began with just 10 businesses responding to the request, however today there are more than 20 businesses from both the private and public sector that participate.
Despite much of the criticism that is being placed on the school, Jones is of the opinion that the public image of the institution is changing slowly and there are things that the school can now boast about.
âWe might not reach the area where academic performance is concerned but we are working to change it, but we are up there with the others, we are up there with sports and have placed several times for the Young Leaders,â he stated.
Adding to this, the school recently placed first and second respectively for the girls and boys divisions in the annual Inter-school Athletics Championship that was held last week.
The Career day was held last Friday at the school.
