Students excel after remediation

An innovation has been introduced by the Ministry of Education to recognise the achievements of students who did not pass the Common Entrance Examinations (CEE), but performed well at the CXC/CSEC exams last year.

The special award for the top students after remediation, was introduced at this year’s National Awards Ceremony, and saw more than 50 students being recognized for their performances.{{more}}

Ten students were successful with seven passes, 24 passed six subjects, 24 passed five and one student had eight passes.

That student is 19-year-old Angus Lewis, a former student of the Bethel High School.

Lewis was placed at secondary school in September 2000 after failing the CEE.

According to the school, after a difficult first year, which he had to repeat, Lewis settled down and applied himself to his school work and it was smooth sailing from then on.

Six years later he had passes in English A, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Social Studies and Electrical Document Preparation Management (EDPM).

He is currently continuing studies in accounts and business at the St. Vincent Community College.

Also continuing studies in business at the Community College is Teressa Black, the top female performer after remediation.

Black, who attended the Dr. J. P. Eustace Memorial Secondary School, gained seven passes with two grade ones in English A, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts and Business, Social Studies and Information Technology.

According to her secondary school, her success came as no surprise to all, as she was considered one of the hardest working students over the past five years.

The remediation awards were introduced to demonstrate to students who were unsuccessful in the CEE that they were just as capable of achieving success as students who passed the CEE.
