Young Leaders launched in Union Island

The Union Island Secondary School Young Leaders group launched its 2007

programme at the Mary Hutchinson Primary School, Union Island on Thursday, March 12, 2007. In keeping with this year’s theme of “Your Choice…Your Destiny” the Young Leaders have chosen the topic “Curbing Violence and Drugs in Schools; Being tolerant towards others through the process of education”.

The aim of their project is to tackle the increasing issue of violence in schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines by teaching children how to be more tolerant towards others.{{more}}

At the Mary Hutchinson Primary School, the Young Leaders spoke to the students on drugs and violence and gave them measures how to prevent violence and drug use. Some of their advice included, “Be slow to anger, slow to accuse, quick to tolerate; respect others and yourself; and be responsible for your actions.”

The Young Leaders group members see this as necessary as the issues of violence and drugs are destroying our nation’s youths. The Young Leaders also visited the Stephanie Brown Primary School, Clifton, Union Island on Friday, March 16, 2007, where they delivered a similar message.

The group will be taking their programme to other schools in the Southern Grenadines and to Carriacou their neighbour a dependency of Grenada. The other schools include, the Canouan Government School, the Mayreau Government, and Bishop’s College and Hillsborough Secondary Schools, Carriacou, Grenada.
