Students qualify for quiz finals

The questions were tough and the tension was high as 10 secondary school students competed in the Rotary Nutrition Quiz.

On Wednesday, June 8, at the Peace Memorial Hall, the questions based on everything from food groups to their contents, sounded as though they were based more on medicine than on something edible. {{more}}

Event Quiz Master Andrea Robin noted that the questions were aimed at testing the knowledge of the students, since the top four would be selected as representatives at the Regional Quiz Competition slated for September 28 to 29 at the UWI Distance Teaching Facility Tele-Conference Centre.

She congratulated the students on reaching the finals but encouraged them to gain more knowledge in Home Economics/Nutrition. This since because they would be competing against students ranging from Belize to Guyana.

Caletra Ferdinand and Jenny Sandy, both of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown (SJCK) took first and second places. However, selecting the third and fourth places posed a challenge since three finalists tied for those positions.

After four rounds of tie breaking, Donnelle McKie of the Girls’ High School (GHS) took the third spot, while Lesrie Holder of the Campden Park Secondary School (CPSS) and Sherika Walker of the Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia (EHSM) battled the quiz out.

The CPSS student eventually persevered to take fourth spot. Prizes include monetary awards, trophies, books and vouchers.
