More classrooms for St. Vincent schools

The total number of students attending secondary schools here is expected to number 10, 440 by September.

This information was relayed to a packed Arnos Vale Playing field last Tuesday, June 7, as teachers and students gathered for a National Education Rally. {{more}}

Addressing the gathering, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Laura Browne noted that enrollment has been on the increase since 2000 when the total number stood at 7,867 students. Enrollment in 2004 stood at 9426.

In order to meet the increasing demand, government has moved to construct temporary annexes at secondary institutions and Browne informed the audience that additional permanent classrooms are in the pipeline.

These are to be built at Sandy Bay, Buccament Bay and at the Richmond Hill Government School in Kingstown, commencing 2005. Browne also revealed that during the construction period, there would be additional staff deployed while some students will

proceed on vacation earlier than usual.
