The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted at Kyoto, Japan on December 11th, 1997, and signed on behalf of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1998.

Article 24 of the Protocol stipulates: “The Protocol is subject to ratification by States which are Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change.”

The Convention on climate change seeks to stabilise the release of green house gases into the atmosphere and the Kyoto Protocol is a mechanism that sets targets which have to be met by a given time.
