Searchlight recognizes World Environment Day with tree planting
The activity took place on Thursday, June 8, in collaboration with the National Public Library and the Forestry Division, in the presence of pupils from the New Grounds Primary School.
Teshorne Caine, administrative manager at Interactive Media Ltd, (publishers of SEARCHLIGHT) said during the tree planting ceremony that World Environment Day is a day on which one should take action.
“It is not just a day for us to sit on our chairs and read about what is happening. It is a day for us to take action, action to preserve our environment, action to preserve nature. Today, SEARCHLIGHT is doing just that,â Caine said.
She also explained that trees are vital for the environment, since they provide oxygen, enhance the quality of the air, preserve the soil and help with wild life.
Caine also encouraged other persons to help to preserve the environment, which is of extreme importance now, especially since St Vincent and the Grenadines has been battling with climate change.
Additionally Caine said that part of SEARCHLIGHTâs mission to inform and educate people and in order for the company to achieve its mission, people must be able to read.
“We thought that the library was the ideal place for us to have the tree planting ceremony and also have the children being a part of the initiative.â
Speaking at the yesterdayâs ceremony, chief forestry officer Fitzgerald Providence said that they quickly jumped at the opportunity to partner with SEARCHLIGHT because the Forestry Division is about preserving the entire community of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
He explained that apart from providing oxygen, the black pearls grown on the tree are used in jewelry making. Providence also stated that there needs to be a green city, as it relates to energy and also beautification.
“This plant will be a part of that initiative.â
Director of the Library Michelle Campbell thanked SEARCHLIGHT for partnering with them.
