I can still work, despite my disability – Jackson

Judy Jackson, a less physically-abled Lowmans Hill resident, is determined to show possible employers that she could work efficiently, despite her disability.

Speaking with SEARCHLIGHT last week, the 45-year-old mother of nine disclosed that she had polio when she was a child, causing damage to one of her legs.

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children. The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread, mainly through faecal-oral route, or less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestines, from where it can invade the nervous system and can cause paralysis.

Jackson revealed that her woes began in March 2016, when the Central Water and Sewage Authority (CWSA) disconnected her water supply; however, she still receives the monthly charges for garbage collection.

“I have no work to pay the bill… I need a work. I can’t just dey so.”

Jackson said the situation makes her uncomfortable because she lives a good distance away from her neighbours and her children need to have water in the house.

She told SEARCHLIGHT that she has worked with the Town Board and also as a labourer.

“I could work anuh, people does watch me and feel well I can’t work,” she added.

“The way people looking at it, them feel because one we leg damage, them feel we brain damage, we hand damage, we whole body damage… not that they have to look into the person… what they could do,”

Jackson was adamant that she needs a means to meet her bills at the end of the month. (AS)
