No Miss Carival for Vincy Mas 2017
The Miss Carival Show, which has been running for 31 years, will not take place this year, as the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) looks at restructuring of the regional pageant.
Chair of the CDC Ricardo Adams told SEARCHLIGHT that there are a few reasons for not having the show this year.
Adams said that firstly, the show does not attract the patronage it used to, so the CDC needs to review the event and look at what needs to be done in terms of making Miss Carival an attractive show that will bring patrons into the Victoria Park.
Secondly, Adams said that the show is a very expensive event to put on and the CDC is currently not getting the returns expected. The event can cost the CDC upwards of EC$100,000 to stage.
âWe have lost significant amounts of money on that show in the last two years and attendance is declining,â explained Adams, who noted that even if they break even on a show and persons are not coming out, there is no point of doing the show because financially it does not make sense.
He noted also that last year, a significant amount of energy and money was spent to bring international recording artiste Marlon Roudette (formerly of the band Mattafix) to the Victoria Park for Miss Carival, but the attendance was still low and the show made no money.
âWe need to look at it and do something to make it attractive to the public,â said Adams.(LC)
