Dr Erling Harry Scholarship Fund announces awardees

The Dr Erling Harry Scholarship Fund has announced two young Vincentians as the main recipients of financial assistance.

Jael Browne and Ricklon Hutchinson were chosen out of a plethora of applicants to receive US$8,000 each to go toward pursuing tertiary education.

Browne is a resident of Calder and is pursuing a degree in International Trade at university, and Hutchinson is from Bequia/Union Island and will be completing a medical degree at All Saints University (SVG), with the hope of later specializing in neurosurgery.

Dr Erling Harry was a prominent Vincentian cardiologist, who trained and worked in the United States of America. His family founded the academic scholarship last year in his memory to mark the first anniversary of his death.

Jeff Harry, son of Dr Erling Harry, explained that there had been so many “impressive candidates” that three smaller scholarships were created.

Those recipients are: Calvon Charles, of Enhams; Charmaine Cyrus, of Long Wall; and Judaja Prescott, of Kingstown.

Harry further stated: “We want to thank every candidate that applied. We greatly appreciate all that you put into your applications. We also would like to thank everyone that shared this scholarship and spread the word. Through this process, we saw that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has a bright future with phenomenal leaders ready to make an impact. We hope these contributions help these amazing individuals achieve their goals, as well as benefit the country as a whole in the future.”

Dr Erling Harry was one of the first Vincentian doctors ever to practise in the US in the late 1960s.

Over five decades, he helped to fund hospital projects in St Vincent and the Grenadines, sent medicine and supplies back home, as well as helped to mentor Vincentian students in the medical field.

The Dr Erling Harry Scholarship Fund (established in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic and the American College of Cardiology) is open to Vincentian-born students who are entering or currently enrolled at college or university.
