Latin dance and culture were very popular in SVG in the past, especially in the 1970âs, with live performances from bands like St Vincentâs Supersound Latinaires Orchestra.
Recently, the group Latin Passion SVG Inc (LPSVG) was formed in September 2013, by Vincentian Anton Jardine, with the goal of introducing Vincentians to the international techniques involved in Latin dancing. Thus far LPSVG has hosted visiting dancers/instructors from Barbados, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Venezuela, Australia and the United Kingdom. There are also Vincentian instructors.
There are currently two weekly Latin events in St Vincent, with a regular following of locals and expats, including Spanish and Latin American patrons.
From June 6 to 9 2014, LPSVG will be hosting SVGâs first Latin Fiesta Weekend.
During the weekend, there will be a series of Latin dance workshops for beginners in Salsa, Bachata and Afro-Latin dance Kizomba. There will be a visiting group of some 20 dancers and instructors from the Exposé Latin Dance Academy â St Lucia. The weekend also includes events at Prospect Racquet Club, FLOW Wine Bar and in Bequia.
Persons interested in registering for the Latin Fiesta Weekend workshops and events, can contact LPSVG via Facebook.
