Samantha Matthews crowned Miss Young Mothers 2013

After a postponement on October 25 because of heavy rains, individuals from across the country gathered on the Layou hard court last Sunday night to witness seven young ladies vie for the title of Miss Young Mothers.{{more}}

Throughout the show, the master of ceremonies, perhaps sensing what was to come, kept reiterating to the crowd that “the judges’ decision is final”. And although many persons did not agree with the decision, it was Miss Bambareaux, Samantha Matthews, who walked away with the crown.

While SEARCHLIGHT was interviewing Matthews after she was crowned, individuals could be heard arguing in the background about whether or not she deserved it. However, the mother of three, who was recently crowned Miss Bikini Babes, did not seem fazed by the harsh criticism.

“I [didn’t] expect it,” she said. “It was so shocking and surprising”.

Matthews copped the Best Talent category with a monologue that had the crowd laughing and cheering from beginning to end.

The 23-year-old also gained the judges’ nod for Best Interview.

In addition, she also earned the Miss Congeniality award and the Digicel/Professional Secretarial Consultancy Services People’s Choice Award, which was judged on svgvibes.com.

The first runner-up title was awarded to Miss Falls of Baleine, Shanique DeShong, whose commendable performance earned her Best Introduction and Best Swimwear.

Miss Layou Petroglyphs, Shakira McDowall, took the second runner-up position, while Miss Botanic Gardens, Nadine Matthews, took the third runner-up position. She was also adjudged the winner of the Best Evening Wear for her close-fitting blue, yellow and black dress, which was titled “Midnight in Paradise”.

The Miss Young Mothers queen believes that this type of show will help young women who have children to boost their self-esteem and give them a sense of independence.

“All the young ladies out there, not because they have a child, one or two… I’m encouraging all the young mothers out there…come on. Shake up [yourselves]. Show the man that you’re independent. Free up your mind and don’t let anyone feel like they’re more than you,” Matthews said.

The other contestants were Miss Rawacou Dahmara Lynch, Miss La Soufriere Melina Smart and Miss Montreal Gardens Rolanda Gloster.

A variety of guest artistes, including Singing Kristy, Shaunelle McKenzie, Orande “Bomani” Charles, Vesta “First Lady” Caine and Delroy “Fireman” Hooper, crossed the stage on Sunday night.
