Last year, the tent made a remarkable comeback after being dormant for a while, with a selection of four Calypsonians, Javelleâ Lady Diamondâ Frank, Elliott âMysteryâ Shallow, Jerome âParryâ Samuel and Glenroy âMan Sachyâ Samuel, to the National Calypso Monarch Semifinals, with Shallow and Frank going on to the Finals.
The PâTani Tent was first out of the blocks when it was launched on April 30 at the Marriaqua Community Centre, before a large and appreciative crowd, including Ann Miller, President of the National Calypso Association.
The Tent band âPâTani Calypso Bandâ, the musical baby of Music Arranger David âJardoâ Jardine former X-a-dus member, featured Alla-G in a jump-up style Soca medley.
The crowd was also entertained by The PâTani Dancers, performing a dance to an X-a-dus classic âDonât Bend Downâ and then got carnival fever with the presentation of ten masqueraders who portrayed Mas from High Voltage Mas Band.
The Minister of Agriculture Saboto Caesar attended Tent night to hear Barbara âAuntie Babsâ Bacchus, a new Calypsonian, perform her song âSabotoâ, dedicated to him. At the end of the first encore, he joined her on stage.
Ninjaâs âTribute to Rasumâ, Mysteryâ s âThe Teacher, Man Sachyâs âWe Are Who We Areâ, Tump-Iâs, âRough Timesâ, Robotâs âTell Demâ, Fish-Iâs âI Love Calypsoâ, Puttahâs âThis Country in Troubleâ, Jerryâs âWhy Lieâ, Parryâs âWork to be doneâ and Diyaâs âDomestic Violenceâ are all well written and confidently delivered. Dâinterceptor singing his number âThe Worker, Datsue âComessâ and Small Bobâs Mashing Upâ created a real party atmosphere.
PâTani Bra of âJump with Braâ fame has announced that he is returning to the stage after a very long absence.
Next Tent night is on Wednesday, May 30 at DâNutmeg House in Mesopotamia, opposite Bun Pan.
The PâTani Calypso Tent would like to take this opportunity to thank the following persons and business houses who have assisted in the Tentâs production so far: Petra and Elvin Pompey from DâNutmeg House, Arlington Thomas from A R&D Trucking Co, Kingsley âWhitemanâ Collis from High Voltage Mas Band, Andre Sutherland from Multigraphics Services, St Vincent Brewery (Hairoun), AIIa-G and Latchy, our resident emcees.
