P’Tani comes alive with Kaiso in ‘The Valley’

The P’Tani Calypso Tent from the Marriaqua Valley with a cast of 18 Calypsonians, is preparing for this year’s National Calypso Monarch Preliminary Competition.{{more}}

Last year, the tent made a remarkable comeback after being dormant for a while, with a selection of four Calypsonians, Javelle’ Lady Diamond’ Frank, Elliott ‘Mystery’ Shallow, Jerome ‘Parry’ Samuel and Glenroy ‘Man Sachy’ Samuel, to the National Calypso Monarch Semifinals, with Shallow and Frank going on to the Finals.

The P’Tani Tent was first out of the blocks when it was launched on April 30 at the Marriaqua Community Centre, before a large and appreciative crowd, including Ann Miller, President of the National Calypso Association.

The Tent band ‘P’Tani Calypso Band’, the musical baby of Music Arranger David ‘Jardo’ Jardine former X-a-dus member, featured Alla-G in a jump-up style Soca medley.

The crowd was also entertained by The P’Tani Dancers, performing a dance to an X-a-dus classic ‘Don’t Bend Down’ and then got carnival fever with the presentation of ten masqueraders who portrayed Mas from High Voltage Mas Band.

The Minister of Agriculture Saboto Caesar attended Tent night to hear Barbara ‘Auntie Babs’ Bacchus, a new Calypsonian, perform her song ‘Saboto’, dedicated to him. At the end of the first encore, he joined her on stage.

Ninja’s ‘Tribute to Rasum’, Mystery’ s ‘The Teacher, Man Sachy’s ‘We Are Who We Are’, Tump-I’s, ‘Rough Times’, Robot’s ‘Tell Dem’, Fish-I’s ‘I Love Calypso’, Puttah’s ‘This Country in Trouble’, Jerry’s ‘Why Lie’, Parry’s ‘Work to be done’ and Diya’s ‘Domestic Violence’ are all well written and confidently delivered. D’interceptor singing his number ‘The Worker, Datsue ‘Comess’ and Small Bob’s Mashing Up’ created a real party atmosphere.

P’Tani Bra of ‘Jump with Bra’ fame has announced that he is returning to the stage after a very long absence.

Next Tent night is on Wednesday, May 30 at D’Nutmeg House in Mesopotamia, opposite Bun Pan.

The P’Tani Calypso Tent would like to take this opportunity to thank the following persons and business houses who have assisted in the Tent’s production so far: Petra and Elvin Pompey from D’Nutmeg House, Arlington Thomas from A R&D Trucking Co, Kingsley ‘Whiteman’ Collis from High Voltage Mas Band, Andre Sutherland from Multigraphics Services, St Vincent Brewery (Hairoun), AIIa-G and Latchy, our resident emcees.

The P’Tani Calyp-Soca Monarch Finals will be held on Wednesday, June 13 at D’Nutmeg House.(DD)
