SEARCHLIGHT recently caught up with the beautiful lead vocalist of the band Knetic, and with Carnival 2012 already in progress, Nikki thinks this is her year.
Having started her career back in 2010, Nikki said she went to producer Adrian Bailey to record a song.
âAt the time, Bailey was looking for an artiste to place in the band Hottsand, since they did not have a female vocalist at the time…He heard me sing, then it was just like that I was put in the band…,â Nikki recounted.
In 2010, Nikki released âWalk Outâ and âNeed youâ. In 2011, she followed up with âWill not stayâ.
The Campden Park resident, who resides in the United States and travels back to her homeland for every Carnival, said her song for 2012, âWet Meâ, is definitely one to make heads turn.
âThe song, which is a ragga soca has gained favourable response and airplay I must say…I just want to let people see my musical talents…âshe stressed.
The former Intermediate High School student who migrated to the United States in 2007, says she began writing music at the age of 11 and it was not until her brother heard her sing that she really decided to take her music seriously.
However, Nikki wants her fans to know that she is not just a one-dimensional artiste, stating that she writes music for different genres, including pop, dancehall and rap.
âI would definitely like to branch off into R&B and Reggae and expand my career, but I am just taking it one step at a time right now…,â Nikki said.
Since she jumped onto the scene, Nikki has performed at a number of venues including Cafe Omar and Crystal Manor in the United States. Sheâs also done shows in Toronto, Canada, and the recently held Party Monarch at Victoria Park.
Having won the Miss South Leeward title in 2006, and Miss SVG teen the following year, Nikki said those shows helped to build her confidence appearing in front of large crowds. âBefore I used to go on tour and so on, I used to be so nervous when a show was coming up, but now with the exposure from Hottsand and now Knetic, I am eager. I sometimes canât wait to hear I have a gig,â she added.
She assured patrons that they can look forward to more music from her this year. She stated that she has a song called âWaist line wukâ on the âPollywack riddimâ from Galanaire Avalaunche Orkeztra Studios, âWe ainât ready to goâ and two power soca songs in the works called âReady for the roadâ and âWuk itâ.
For helping her throughout her career, Nikki extended gratitude to Andrew James, Davan âBasicâ Cato, Galanaire Avalaunche Studios and all of her fans.
