Fitzroy âBrother Ebonyâ Joseph copped the best new calypso crown for the second consecutive year, Shernelle âSkarpyonâ Williams won in the best new soca category, and Vincent âBlakeyâ Cuffy walked away with the Extempo crown.
Singing âHaiti, better days are comingâ, Brother Ebony blasted five other competitors to grab top prize, including former new song winner and Calypso Monarch, Glenroy âSulleâ Casear, who had to settle for 3rd position with his song âCongratulations are in orderâ. Maxwell âTajoeâ Francis, with his song, âWorld Crisisâ came in second.
The other competitors were: George âJah Burkeâ Nedd with âSanky nah sing soâ, Ronald âRon Bâ Browne sang âAh feel it (Haiti) and Granville âMighty Sunblazeâ Findlay with his song âDuties of a monarchâ.
In the Soca category, Skarpyon wooed the audience with his groovy-soca, âRagga Muffinâ which was enough to bump last yearâs winner, Garret âIconâ John into second position. John sang âNo behaviourâ.
Decked in all white attire, Skarpyon, or the Stinger man as he is often called, had a large number of ladies gyrating not only to his song but also his dance moves on stage.
Raeon âMaddzart XOâ Primus had to settle for third place with his song, âWhyne pon meâ.
The other competitors were Roland âPressureâ Peters, Ashi âACâ Cabrel and Ricardo âReckaâ Wilson.
Nothwithstanding the hype surrounding all the other performers on the night, Vincent âBlakeyâ Cuffy was the man who managed to evoke the loudest chants and applause from the crowd.
Judging on crowdâs response, Blakey battled back and forth with Roger âDâLandlordâ Thompson to take Extempo crown for the second straight year.
Blakeyâs steady flow on the microphone proved too much for Thompson, who also gave a good account of himself.
During the battle between both men, Blakey said that DâLanlord âcouldnât turn me boo-boo, yuh face alone resemble ah bundle of calalooâ. This line sent the crowd wild, as they begged for more of Blakeyâs lyrical prowess.
The other participants in the Extempo competition were: William âKojahâ Anthony, Lyndon âSweet SixteenâSamuel and Aubrey âRas Booâ Burgin.
Guest peformances included Bomani and Luta. (KW)
