Culture and creativity blended together inside the Marcomay nightclub last Friday night as the East St. George Carnival 2004 celebrations got under way while the weekly Calliaqua Culture Pot took a break.
The first night of the East St. George Carnival saw five calypsonians and eight young ladies vie for the chance to be crowned in the East St. George competitions. {{more}}
When the judges’ points were tallied, no kings were named, as two ladies dominated the competition. Arlene “Kija Gani the Goddess” Legair wore the calypso crown with “Jaws” and “House Party” while Daniella Baynes wore the queen’s tiara in the queen show.
The well attended show finished around four in the morning but did not lack entertainment. Calliaqua’s own “Luta” and Trinidadian “Iwer George” entertained the crowd, as did the contestants who competed in the calypso and queen shows.
The other calypsonians were Kahalia “Kalaijah” Beache (2nd), Gosnel “GC” Cupid (3rd), Chico B and Tump I.
In the queen show, apart from winning the crown, Baynes took the points for best interview. First runner-up was Shanel Byron while second runner-up and best talent went to Alisha Williams.
Malone Gardener was adjudged best evening gown and most courteous, Marika Haynes got the judges’ nod in swimwear while Miss Photogenic was Allana John. The other contestants were Abigail Sterling and Melissa Edwards.
The queen and calypso shows were followed by J’ouvert Saturday morning while the street jump-up was held on Sunday followed by a Block-O on the Calliaqua Playing Field with music from Visual Audio.
