Home-made Sloppy Joes
A sloppy Joe is basically cooked minced meat in tomato sauce eaten in a burger bun. As the name suggests they can be messy depending on the amount you put in your bun but oh so delicious and a kids favourite.
You will need:
1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 medium sweet pepper diced
2 ribs celery diced (optional)
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 cloves garlic crushed
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground mustard
1/ 2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
8 hamburger buns
Method:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and onion together, stirring occasionally, until beef is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat from the skillet and return skillet to heat. Add in pepper, celery, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, brown sugar, salt, ground mustard, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for 15 to 30 minutes. Simmering time depends on how crisp you want the vegetables. Serve meat hot on toasted buns.
Tips: You can use a little all purpose seasoning and green seasoning to flavour the ground meat. Just leave out the salt until the end if needed. I normally use shegetti sauce instead as my family likes it more.
