I don’t want to go to the prom with a guy

Hey Rosie,

Quick and simple question. I don’t want to go to prom with a guy. I would rather go with a group of girls, then go to the after party with a whole group of friends. My mom is very upset and disappointed because I would not have a picture, corsage etc with a boy. I told her I really don’t care, but she said when I get older, I would regret it. Should I give in and ask my friend just to fill in for the pictures and what my mom wants? Because, as soon as we get to the prom, I would be hanging with my girls!

Let me say this, your mom will always want the traditional things that she has always dreamt for you. Even though it’s not a big deal to you, I’d give her the opportunity to have the pictures and fuss over you for the few minutes before you leave – it wouldn’t kill you.

I do realize that times have changed and the prom scene is very different from my days of going to my graduation ball.  I think it’s a very easy compromise, to let your mom have her moment and then you can have yours after with your friends.

For me, above everything, I am asking you to be safe… no drugs and alcohol. Also most importantly, no drinking and driving either. Have a safe and enjoyable time and congrats on this big moment in your life.
