Sion Hill Sports and Cultural Club marking 50 year milestone

There was a celebration in Sion Hill yesterday, Monday, April 7, 2025 to mark the 50th year since the start of the Sion Hill Sports and Culture Club.

The launch was the start of the club’s year-long activities, but “The real Sion Hill Day will be in October,” Earl ‘Caba’ Bennett remarked.

At a press conference on Wednesday, April 2,2025, Keisha Johnson, a member of the anniversary committee outlined some of the activities for the year, which will climax on Independence Day which Bennett referred to as ‘Sion Hill Day’.

Johnson said the activities will include a church service and brunch in June or July, on an as-yet unannounced date, to take place at the Sion Hill Church of the Ascension (Anglican church).

She said while the brunch will cater for everybody, “our emphasis is on the elderly, because where would we be without our elderly? We have to serve them. We have to take care of them?”

Johnson, who is also from Sion Hill, reminisced on her upbringing in the community, where still resides, and expressed gratitude for being selected as part of the 50th-anniversary committee, revealing that she is a member of the Sion Hill Steel Euphonium Steel Orchestra as well as the New Artist Movement (NAM).

It was at the press conference that she announced that David “Darkie” Williams, also a member of NAM, would join her in a drama presentation on Monday (yesterday).

Johnson as part of her contribution to the anniversary, also revealed that she would be launching a drama school for persons in Sion Hill, where people in the community “can bring their children to Keisha’s Drama Academy at the CW Prescod Primary School”.
