Petit Bordel Students target health and wealth with their chips production business

Agricultural Science students at the Petit Bordel Secondary School (PBSS) have conceptualized a natural food product in an effort to build technical and business skills as well as offer a healthier snack alternative in light of concerns about rising non-communicable diseases (NCD’s).

P&B Chipz venture started back in February, 2024 when a quartet of Form Five students- Oran Williams, Lucine Bowens, Kellesia Williams, Deondre Olliverre and Kenran Pierre, harvested sweet potatoes from the school’s farm and found themselves disinterested with the idea of selling potatoes by the heap. They collectively decided to create the sweet potato chips product targeting classmates and teachers.

Agricultural Science teacher, Osnel Byam, told SEARCHLIGHT that he and other staff members invested money to build out the students’ idea which has since blossomed into a range of products including plantain, banana, and dasheen earmarked to start shortly.

The product is offered in several flavours – spicy, sweet chilli, BBQ and sea salt. Byam said the increasing numbers of Vincentians who suffer with NCD’s such as hypertension made it necessary to provide a low-sodium product.

“It may not be a problem that people see but we recognize it and we want the students to eat healthier to reduce these numbers,” he shared.

“Then we used that as a base, and the revenue from previous sales and other sources within the department helped to fund the project.”
