Tourism Authority launches Heroes and Heritage Month Programme for 2025

Last Monday, February 24, 2025, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development, and Culture, launched the 2025 National Heroes and Heritage Month activities whose theme this year is, ‘Appreciating our identity; Preserving our heritage with pride’.

The launch took place at a media briefing held at the office of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC), Victoria Park, which was addressed by a number of persons.

The month-long celebrations, during which homage is paid to the nation’s National Hero, The Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer, and also include a range of cultural and historical activities run through the entire month of March. Activities will also showcase various tourism sites and aspects of our Vincentian heritage.

President of the Garifuna Heritage Foundation, David “Darkie” Williams said over the years the Foundation’s most strenuous area of activity has to do with preparing lectures, addressing students at their schools, and facilitating the work of students doing research on the Garifuna.

“That takes up a good chunk of our time. But throughout the year, our two flagship events are the International Garifuna Conference, and the Schools Garifuna Folk Festival.”

The March 11-13 conference will be preceded a week earlier by the Schools Garifuna Folk Festival, to be held at Victoria Park.

It will feature schools performing pieces on this year’s theme, or on a theme associated with the Garifuna heritage and culture; while the International Garifuna Conference entails the delivery of research material to the general public.
