Police warn owners and dealers to comply with License plate laws

The Traffic Department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) is sending a warning to motorists to comply with laws regarding license plates, or face the consequences in court.

The police say they have noted recent trends with drivers personalizing license plates, displaying license plates on other parts of their vehicle other than the rear and front bumpers, and also using foreign license plates.

Speaking on the Cop Chat programme on WEFM on Thursday, February 20, 2025, Sergeant Roden Hannaway explained that there are requirements for the size and spacing of characters on a license plate.

“…all figures and letters must be three and a half inches high by four and a half inches wide, and the spacing between each adjoining letter/ figure must be half an inch. So before we start to prosecute persons, we are here to educate you as to the specifics,” the Sergeant said.

On the discussion members of the panel noted a concerning trend where businesses that produce license plates are giving vehicle owners choices as to how they want their plates to look.
