Conductor escapes jail time for choking, pushing dissatisfied passenger
A Stubbs bus conductor received a suspended prison sentence, and was ordered to pay compensation, after admitting to choking a woman and pushing her to the ground because she refused to pay the bus fare because she did not reach her desired destination.
Areje Lewis, 21, appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika McKenzie on February 11, 2025 where he was sentenced for assaulting Vandica Clarke, 20, of Spring Village on December 23, 2024, causing actual bodily harm.
The facts are that about 3:45 p.m on the date in question, Clarke along with her mother, Helen, left Stubbs in a grey minibus with registration number HX299, heading towards Kingstown.
The van arrived at the Peace Memorial Hall bus stop around 4:10 p.m, and Lewis, who was the conductor on the van, shouted to the passengers that the van was turning back there.
Clarke, and her mother disembarked the van and decided that they were not going to pay because they had not reached their destination.
