Challenging, but successful 2024 for the Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has counted 2024 as a success despite not meeting the target set out for the annual Kettle Appeal, and also having to assist far more persons in the latter half of the year following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

The target for the appeal, launched back in early November, was set at $200,000 this year and was assisted by volunteers from the Girl Guides Association and other individuals.

Salvation Army Captain, Rose Buissereth, said the support from the business community went a long way in allowing the Army to complete the initiatives mounted during the holiday season. She also expressed thanks to the public for donations, however small.

“We had set a target of $200,000 for the year but we have not achieved it as yet, but I know we will achieve it. “Any change they put, either $1 or $2, that makes a difference and it makes us be able to give 1,500-plus hampers.”

This year the Salvation Army increased the number of hampers distributed to less fortunate individuals by over 500.

Captain Buissereth disclosed that the July 1, 2024 category four hurricane, sent more Vincentians flocking to their doors.

“When the feeding programme was stopped during COVID-19 … we saw even children coming to get something to eat. After [Hurricane] Beryl the numbers increased even more. Before Beryl we used to feed about 100 persons a day, but after that the amount of people coming for the feeding programme increased everyday. Sometimes we feed 200 and even reach 250.”

The annual Children’s Christmas party also catered to increased numbers this year, with 250 being treated to lunch, dessert and gifts. In addition, they were able to give close to 200 individuals a Christmas lunch, despite only initially catering for 150 persons for the annual give back treat.

Captain Buissereth said they are counting on the generosity of Vincentians at home and abroad to be able to meet the growing needs of vulnerable communities.

“It was a successful year even though in the middle there were a lot of challenges coming our way, but God helped us to pass through.”
