Brewster provides employment for BARTEC masonry graduates
Three men, who graduated from the Barrouallie Technical Institute (BARTEC) a week ago, were offered immediate employment by the Constituency Representative for Central Leeward, Orando Brewster.
Unlike some graduates, Godwin Duncan, Xavique Gregg and Renaldo Duncan did not have to spend a considerable amount of time seeking for a job. They obtained employment with the Ministry of Housing four days after graduation.
On November 1, 2024 at the BARTEC graduation ceremony, Brewster, who is also Minister of Housing, promised to place the three trainees, who graduated from the masonry programme, on teams that are building houses for the Ministry of Housing.
“…I want to make a commitment to the three young men because I want them to be a positive influence in their community, and I’m going to put you, as soon as you want, on teams that are building houses for the Ministry of Housing. This is what happens when you persevere and when you stay faithful and true because I didn’t come here this morning with this plan.”
Brewster said that when he learnt of three men graduating in masonry, he figured that since he is the Minister of Housing and he has plenty work to do, that he should put the graduates’ skills to the test.
“So before I leave here today, I want to make sure I get all your contact information and by next week God’s willing, you will be attached…and this is what I am about, and it doesn’t stay there because on Wednesday night, I had a meeting with the General Manager for St Vincent, Grenada and St Lucia at Sandals and I’m going to sit with him because he has indicated that they are going to have a bumper season.”
Brewster told those at the graduating ceremony that while he was there, the manager told him that 21 butlers had just been hired.
“…I’m going to make it my business to have a conversation with him to see how best he can partner not only with this class, but with the future of the class especially from food and drinks and…food prep and so on…”.
Brewster also said that even if it means securing internships for the BARTEC graduates he will speak with the general manager so that they can have the experience of working at a “world class” resort under their belt.
“Everyone will have their individual needs and wants, but I made it a philosophy that I when I do anything within my constituency, it must…not be just individual, but it must affect the community as a whole.”
School Counsellor, Deon Fraser, who chaired the ceremony told the Minister, “We are going to hold you to your word”, and she encouraged all the graduates to make the most of the opportunities that are being presented to them.
The ceremony saw 22 trainees receiving certificates in Business Administration, Food and Drinks Service, Food Preparation, Garment Production, Housekeeping and Masonry.
