Larger and cooler parade for 45th Independence Anniversary – SoP Simmons
Troops participating in the 45th Independence night parade on October 27, 2024, are welcoming the change as previous parades held during the day resulted in some persons fainting on the parade grounds.
This was the view expressed by Superintendent of Police, Junior Simmons during the October, 14,2024 press briefing to announce changes to the National Independence Parade to be held at Victoria Park on October 27, 2024.
“We are aware that in the past parades were held in the morning from 8:00 a.m, and the extreme weather had an impact on the troops on parade, and many of them… fainted. I believe holding the parade from 6:00 p.m … will be cooler, therefore we would be more comfortable. Not only for the troops, but also for the attendees.”
Speaking to members of the media, SoP Simmons shared some key details of the military parade which he said will be a “spectacle”.
This year’s parade is expected to be significantly larger, as more troops have been invited to participate.
Three bands will be on parade on Sunday evening- the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force Band, the Cadet Force Band, and the Royal Grenada Police Force Band.
In addition, approximately 40 Vincentian sailors who are currently serving in the British Royal Navy will be on parade as well.
Simmons said rehearsals are well underway and “going well” and he believes this year’s event will inspire patriotism among Vincentians.
Another change to this year’s celebration will be the national toast to the nation, with all Vincentians invited to join, as well as a three-cheer salute to close off the parade.
A cultural concert will follow the military parade featuring dance, steel band performances, and traditional aspects of Vincentian culture.
