Paul’s Avenue man shot dead

Paul’s Avenue, a community in the heart of Central Kingstown, is once again ground zero for a brazen shooting, this time resulting in the death of Jawanza “Sanga” Fraser.

The 45-year-old was standing in the doorway of a shop in the area talking to a friend when a gunman, disguised with a wig and sunglasses, opened fire on him, striking him multiple times in the torso.

Kyle Ragguette was grazed on the hand by a bullet during the attack, while four men in the shop were unhurt by the barrage of bullets.

The shooter is said to have casually walked from the Gaymes Book store area and pumped several shots into Fraser before slowly running towards the National Lotteries Building, after which he turned left and ran into the heart of Kingstown making good his escape.

Soon after the 2 p.m. shooting, the police released a photo of the suspect as he made his escape running along the road in front of the SVG Teachers’ Co-operative Credit Union (SVGTCCU) building in Paul’s Avenue. He wore only sunglasses to mask his identify as the faux-locks wig he was wearing fell off his head in the road outside the Metrocint General Insurance Company Limited Building.

Up to press time no one was able to put a name to the face as police urge people to come forward with any information that may lead to the killer’s arrest.

Fraser, the 32nd homicide in SVG for 2024, survived three previous attempts on his life, all having landed him in hospital nursing gunshot wounds.

Fraser was first shot over 20 years ago. In that incident, he was walking in the Wilson Hill area when a gunman shot him in the foot.

On Sunday October 14, 2017 in Paul’s Avenue, while standing outside his residence opposite the Avenues Sports Bar, a gunman shot Fraser six times.

At that time, Fraser said he was on his phone when a silver Toyota Corolla Runx pulled up close to him, and he observed persons inside, after which he was riddled with bullets.

He said one of the persons in the vehicle attempted to get out, but a woman began screaming and the individual dropped back into the vehicle which sped off in the direction of the Gaymes Book Store, made an illegal left turn towards the VINLEC building with shots being fired from the car while the assailants made good their escape.

The shooting was done in the full view of several children who were playing in the area at the time.

Fraser was rushed to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) where medical personnel stabilized him.

Three men, Jomorni “Small Man” Tash of Murray’s Village, Recardo “Shrek” Mc Fee of Villa and Collin “Coco” David of Glen were later charged with attempting to murder Fraser, but the charges were later dropped as Fraser refused to give evidence.

A third attempt was made on his life on Friday December 23, 2022 while Fraser was at the Avenues Sports Bar in Paul’s Avenue. Two gunmen emerged from a white Nissan Tiida and opened fire on a group of men.

Fraser was struck in his upper chest, while another resident, Omo Simmons, was hit in his foot at around 8:52 p.m. Both men survived the attack.

Fraser, who at the time of his death was in the process of distributing book bags, lunch bags and school supplies to needy children, is the brother of Lamont “Dutchie” Hector, one of five men who were shot and killed in the Harbour Club area on July 19, 2023 in the biggest mass shooting in this country. Fraser was the father of three children.
